Me oh my, I love pie!By Mermaid Shelley
Andi McDowell plays a character named Dorothy Withers in the movie Michael. She is a self-proclaimed angel expert and wanna-be country western lyricist. In this light-hearted movie there is a wonderful scene about pie. Ms. Withers composes a song on the spot about how much she loves pie.
Me oh my
Nothing tastes sweet, wet, salty and dry
all at once o well it's pie
Apple!
Pumpkin!
Minced
an' wet bottom.
Come to your place everyday if you've got em'
Pie
Me oh my
I love pie
It's a pretty silly song, but I loved the scene because it was exactly how I felt. How about you? Do you love pie, too? Some of our readers do. Here are their favorites and why!

As a kid, holidays were the best of days for me because there was always a pie - apple and pumpkin at Thanksgiving, lemon meringue at Easter, and wonder and delight - Washington Nut for Christmas! Of course Mother's was the best. So when she journeyed all the way by bus from Washington State to San Diego at Christmas time to celebrate Mermaid Shelley's birth, it had to be Washington Nut. ~Judith Homburg

I'm sure that my first piece of pie was eaten in a wheat field. My grandpa was a farmer in Eastern Washington and my uncle has carried on the fourth generation family farming to this day. My grandma, amongst other helping hands, cooked in hot August kitchens. Like her mother before her, she produced hearty, awe-inducing meals fit for harvest hands, hot and dusty from the arduous work of harvest. There were salads and teas, casseroles and cookies, but the crowning end of a harvest dinner (lunch in modern day speak) were her pies. Apple, cherry, peach, blueberry, rhubarb, strawberry, you name it, I ate it. When my sisters and I were old enough to help in the kitchen (and now as an adult, I'm sure it was more work than help) we got to learn to make the pie crust and filling. But the best part was when she pulled out the tiny, child-size pie tins to make us cinnamon, sugar and butter pies. To this day, all I have to do is eat a piece of baked pie crust with the melted butter swirling the sugar and cinnamon together and I am transported to balmy winds and waving grain and the sweet sound of my grandma's laughter. Pie is good. But pie from grandma's hands is the best. ~Hollie Jantz Eastman

Any kind of wild berry pie, like huckleberry or blackberry, is my favorite. I love wild berries because I can go out and pick them myself. It's fun and satisfying knowing they were wild and I picked them. ~Annabelle Morgan

I love strawberry-rhubarb because it reminds me of summer. I remember my aunt used to have a rhubarb plant. I was so worried it was dangerous and I might die. Eating rhubarb stems seemed kind of dangerous. I guess I liked to live life on the edge! ~Victoria Connolly

I'm a big fan of chocolate cream pie, chocolate meringue too. I recently had some chocolate pie that had a caramel bottom that was really fabulous! My mother is the best pie maker. I wish I would have learned from her. People request she makes pies, they line up for them at fund raisers and return pie pans to her promptly in hopes of getting another pie. Pie is also the universal thing that says, I'm sorry, welcome, I love you, good luck, congratulations, or let's be friends. How can you not love pie? ~Timi Weathers

Summertime at grandma's home was filled with scrumptious memories. Root beer floats, fried tomatoes on a burger and my favorite, fresh strawberry-rhubarb pie; they all take me back to very happy times with my sweet grandma Campbell. She came from a very large family, nine surviving children in all. With so many mouths to feed, the children learned quickly the importance of growing their own fruits and vegetables. For over fifty years she and my grandfather, who also came from a large self-sufficient family, grew the most beautiful garden. Grandma didn't limit her gardening to just one or two designated areas, her gardening was planted all-around their quaint little house. The rhubarb was at the front of the house and it would grow into huge red stalks that grandma would clean and freeze for it pies and sauces year-round. Powerfully fragrant strawberries and several other types of berries were planted outback, and they too were stored for future use. But nothing could compare to the fresh taste of strawberry-rhubarb pie. It was tart, sweet and with the accompaniment of grandma's fresh whipped cream or smooth vanilla bean ice cream it was a perfect treat. Her pie was a family favorite, served at countless reunions, bible studies with friends, and on birthdays for those who craved the best. Although it was simple, in fact, similar ingredient options can be found in several recipe books; Grandma made especially good, with homegrown ingredients, caring hands, and mixed in was large heaps of her love. ~Chrissy Dunham |

My favorite pie has to be peach. I love to make it homemade at the end of the summer when our peach tree is laden with the juiciest and best peaches. The rich flavor of the pie, heated and with vanilla ice cream is a delight! ~Mermaid Jennifer

I have great memories of when I was a little girl and my grandma and I would go out in her apple orchard & pick apples. After we filled our buckets, we'd go back into the house & make apple pies! Grandma would give me a mini pie pan and some dough and I'd make my pies while she made hers. If I remember right, no one would touch mine, but hers were perfect & devoured immediately! Grandma continued making pies until she was well into her 90's. Every time I would go down and visit her, she'd send me home with an apple pie.....I'd have a piece every night (and not share with my family) until I ate it all! Grandma died about 4 years ago at 96, and I don't think I've had a good piece of apple pie since! ~De Scott

That is easy. My favorite has always been lemon meringue. I love it! When I was a little girl I asked for lemon meringue pie every year instead of birthday cake. ~Phyllis Ball

I love pie! I love almost all pies. I am not fond of mincemeat and while I love the taste of lemon meringue, I am allergic to egg whites, so meringue is out for me. My favorite is huckeberry. Wait, no... strawberry, apple, peach, plum, pumpkin. Oh, I love cream pies too. I can't decide because I truly love them all. I come from a family of absolutely fabulous pie makers! My grandma's, aunts and especially my mom, Phyllis Ball all made the "best pie I have ever had!" ~Mermaid Debbie |
