The lure of roadside diners

By Jennifer Ferrero
Special to Mermaids of the Lake

You and your family are loaded into the minivan driving to parts unknown to meet up with relatives. It's been a long day in the car and the kids are cranky. Everyone has a little rumble in their tummy, and it's time to eat.

Thirty years ago, it would have been natural to search for a roadside diner. However, now you'd probably pass by a handful of fast food restaurants on the way to finding food before you find a diner.

It's easier to go to the fast food joint, but will it soothe your soul? Will it be a memory maker? Probably not. Fast food is commonplace, but diners are almost always unique. They offer personal service with often, home cooked meals. Diners are usually cloaked in a unique design; maybe with wrap around windows, or chrome lined tables.

Diners are the kind of place where you can order a blue plate special (meat and veggies, usually the special of the day), or a blond with sand (coffee with cream). If you want to be adventurous, you may wish to order Eve with a moldy lid (apple pie with a slice of cheese).

Remember Mel's diner? Good times...

Some diners are run by mom and pop, or handed down through the family. If you love diners, here are some fun resources to learn more about this great national treasure - best enjoyed on summer roadtrips!
