Spicy apple hummus

Here's a recipe from our e-zine - view all recipes.

This healthy dip is packed with the usual protein and fiber of classic hummus, but omitting the garlic and adding apples and spices makes it a fun alternative.

  • 2 15 ounce cans garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 Golden or Red Delicious apple, peeled and chopped
  • 1/3 cup lemon juice
  • ¼ cup creamy peanut butter
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon apple pie spice
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Cinnamon
  • Apple slices, carrot sticks, pita chips, and/or crackers

Place half of the following ingredients in a food processor or blender: garbanzo beans, chopped apple, lemon juice, peanut butter, water, salt, apple pie spice, and cayenne. Process or blend until smooth; transfer to bowl. Repeat with the remaining half of ingredients. Combine all ingredients in a serving bowl. Can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.

Before serving, sprinkle with cinnamon.

Serve with apple slices, carrot sticks, pita chips, and/or crackers.
